Galyn Bernard, 38, and Christina Carbonell, 41, were friends and coworkers at Diapers.com when they realized they had the same problem: They didn’t have a go-to destination for buying cute quality clothing at a reasonable price point for their kids. So they decided to create what they were looking for themselves. The result, after more than a year of research, fundraising and hard work: Primary.com, a shopping site that offers curated colorful basics for kiddos (from infant to age 10)—all for under $25. Here, they share the career and life advice that’s helped them along their journey:

If you’re thinking about starting a business… “Do it. Don’t stall or get caught up in perfecting anything—you will learn as you go. Start personal—think about where there is a void in a market you participate in and what your perfect solution would look like for the things that you want.” —Galyn

Plus… “Surround yourself not just with talented people, but people you want to spend lots of time with. Starting a business is filled with ups and downs. I can’t imagine doing it without an amazing partner and team whom I like solving problems with and whom I have fun with every day.” —Christina

How I prioritize: “I learned from an early manager not to try to tackle more than three things in a day. Keeping that in mind really helps me to prioritize and feel accomplished—even in very small ways—at the end of the day.” —Galyn

My work/life balance strategy: “What helps me is being flexible with where/when work gets done (e.g., at home after the kids are in bed), having an awesome partner and team who help to protect each other’s personal priorities and having traditions with my kids where they have my full attention—whether it’s watching The Voice, having Sunday dinner or throwing a ball around.” —Christina

How I reward myself for reaching a goal: “One of the best things about having a great partner and team is sharing everything—when something goes right, we high five and go grab drinks. Actually, we do the same thing when something goes not so right!” —Galyn

My favorite workout: “Sometimes all I have time to do is run up and down my driveway before my kids get up, but it works! It’s pretty long and I can do it 10 times in 30 minutes. It is a great hassle-free jump-start to the day. When I have time I love to try new classes. I recently did Tracy Anderson with some friends—I couldn’t walk for three days after but it was really fun.” —Galyn

How I’d describe my style: “I’ve never been a big trend-follower. I try to keep it simple and wear things I’m comfortable in. I guess that’s why Primary makes so much sense to me! I aspire to easy sophistication.” —Christina

What’s always in my bag: “Eos lip balm, a Moleskine notebook and a waiter’s corkscrew—you never know when you’re going to need one!” —Christina

What I do to recharge: “I let myself go to bed—even if it’s 8:30 p.m.! I am trying to listen to my body more and I’m much more creative when I am well-rested.” —Galyn

My go-to energy snack: “Fruit smoothies—my kids and I like to make them together.” —Christina

My Mother’s Day plans: “We’re going to go to a great beach near where I live in Connecticut, teach our 5 1/2 year old twins to ride their bikes without training wheels and have a picnic.” —Galyn

“I have an 8 a.m. away soccer game to go to! Who planned that?!” —Christina
