If you paid attention the the arrivals at the CFDA Awards on Monday night, you may have gasped when you saw all three of the Olsen sisters—Ashley, Mary-Kate, and younger sister Elizabeth—walking together on the red carpet. And per usual, they showed up in their signature all-black outfits and, of course, their perfectly tousled, voluminous hair.
Mark Townsend styled all three of the sisters’ hair, and while he created a different look on each sister, there was one element of the styling process that stayed true for all three. Instead of hairspray, Townsend used dry shampoo to create volume. “I liberally spray Dove Dry Shampoo [Townsend is a Dove spokesperson] on the roots after the hair has dried to give volume,” he says. “The starches and powder in dry shampoo build on top of each other, which literally builds lift in the hair. I always spray the roots with dry shampoo before back combing to really lock in the teasing. The reason is because it’s dry, whereas hairspray is very wet, which will clump the roots together.”
For Mary-Kate’s look, Townsend wanted her hair to “look like she came directly from the beach,” so after blow drying her hair with a diffuser, he spritzed Ouai Wave Spray throughout. He curled her hair to make loose waves and then created a side part and sprayed the roots of her hair with the dry shampoo. Townsend wanted Ashley’s hair “to dry as naturally as possible.” To do so without making it look like a mess, Townsend put a few drops of the Dove Regenerative Nourishment Serum-In-Oil in her hair and then let it dry on its own. He curled it a bit with an iron and then sprayed dry shampoo in large sections throughout her roots for massive volume. “We weren’t afraid of a little fuzz with this look,” says Townsend. For Elizabeth, Townsend veered a little away from the usual half-up bun she sports, and went for a classic half-up ponytail. Before sectioning a high ponytail at the crown of Elizabeth’s head, Townsend sprayed her hair with dry shampoo for hold and fullness. The key to making sure Elizabeth’s ponytail stayed in place? Townsend used three black elastics so it “had more grip and a higher lift.” This man is full of genius hacks.
