If you’re one of Jillian Hervey’s 66,000 Instagram followers, you’re familiar with her big, blonde curls. What you may not know is that the 26-year-old lead singer of Lion Babe, who was just named Pantene’s newest spokeswoman, relies heavily on sweat to keep her curls looking great during the hot summer months.
“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a little sweat,” she says. “I’m always moving, so it’s normal for me and it actually makes my curly hair better because it gives it a bit more texture and volume.”
Hervey, who is the daughter of Vanessa Williams, says she avoids using a lot of heat and hair products at once. And, just like most women with naturally curly hair, Hervey avoids dryness like the plague. “On the days that I wash and condition my hair, I use Pantene Pro-V Daily Moisture Renewal Shampoo and Conditioner to strengthen and moisturize my curls,” she said. “Once I’m out of the shower, I’ll detangle my hair using the Pantene Pro-V Daily Moisture Renewal Moisture Mist Detangler. Then, I’ll add a small amount of the Pantene Style Series Maximum Hold Mousse and let them air-dry.”
For dinners out on the town, Hervey says she touches up her curls by winding strands around a small curling iron and then pulls each curl apart for more volume.
Frizz is another challenge Hervey dodges. Her strategy? Strong strands. “I think the key to beautiful, frizz-free curls in the summer is to keep hair healthy,” she says. “It’s really the strength of your hair that causes frizz, not humidity, so it’s really important to me that I keep my curls strong and moisturized to protect my hair from breakage and frizz. It definitely gives my whole summer look a new life!”
Hervey keeps her hair strong by wrapping it nightly and by sleeping on a silk pillowcase to protect her curls from breakage. When it comes to summer makeup, Hervey says she likes to keep it natural. “I love when my skin is glowing, so I just add subtle highlights, mascara, possibly an eyeliner and keep my lips natural with lip balm,” she says.
Applying eyeliner is a makeup ritual Hervey loves, so it only makes sense that she collaborated with M.A.C. to create a signature shimmering gold shade. “I also recently used Alexa Chung’s black liner which is great,” she says. “I will use primers when makeup artists are doing my face for an event, but not when I do it.”
