After dying your hair a new color — whether it be a natural-looking brunette or bright blue — matching your eyebrows to the new hue probably crosses your mind. What about your eyelashes, though? In addition to basic black, salons all around the U.S. are offering now offering colorful lash extensions, and people are taking the opportunity to make everything match.
The colorfully coordinated trend first came to my attention via Kelseyanna Fitzpatrick. The brilliant makeup artist — and member of Kat Von D’s Artistry Collective — often colors her bold shades and coordinates her lash extensions with it. Most recently, she dyed her hair a tangerine orange and added some matching orange extensions to her lashes. She took it one step further by coordinating most of her makeup in the bright orange shade, too. Look how gorgeous the complete look is.
Fitzpatrick isn’t the only one, though. Vlogger Kasey Lauren also regularly dyes her hair a similarly fiery shade, and she tried out the matchy-matchy look last week. Finding a bright red mascara that gives lashes the same look as these lash extensions is a difficult task. (Trust me, I’ve tried.) Plus, the lash extensions are about as low-maintenance as it gets: You can literally wake up with colorful lashes and not have to worry about curling or coating your lashes in anything for a good month or two.
Purple is another popular color for coordinating. Carly Rickards, an esthetician based in Petaluma, Cali., regularly refreshes one of her purple-haired client’s lashes with colorful lash extensions. “I have a handful of clients who always get special colors, though,” she tells Allure. Some of them start off with what she refers to as “highlights,” which are basically just like the ones you get in your hair — random strips of color. “They usually transition to full color because they love it so much,” Rickards adds.
California-based hairstylist Tara Mera, who usually has blue, purple, or blue-and-purple hair, is admittedly obsessed with colorful lashes, too. “I’ve had mine all different colors, lengths, and fullness — even glitter,” she tells Allure. Mera goes to lash specialist Nina Simer at Cosi Bella Day Spa in Martinez, Cali., to fulfill her creative lash fantasies. “I like my nails, hair and lashes to all suit my style and personality,” she adds.
Even if you haven’t ventured into rainbow hair territory, you can still indulge in some colorful lashes. People have been transforming themselves into mermaids with multi-colored lash extensions, regardless of their hair color. You still get to try out the temporary color, but you don’t have to be as monochromatic.
