On the chance that any active voting members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — the body that votes on the Golden Globe Awards — is reading this, please do not vote for David Harbour, who plays Hawkins, Indiana, police chief Jim Hopper on Netflix’s Stranger Things. It’s not that Harbour isn’t wholly deserving of his nomination for Best Supporting Actor — his fatherly affection for Eleven this past season and heroic escapades in those tunnels beneath the pumpkin patch were great. The problem is that if he wins, his costar Joe Keery, who plays goodhearted jock Steve Harrington, will shave his beautiful hair, and that cannot be allowed to happen. I mean, hair-ington is right in his character’s name! Do you really want to be the awards show that deprived the world of such luxurious strands?
This catch-22 came about when Harbour posted a picture to Instagram “tipping his hat” in response to his nomination (and tagging Joe Keery on his sweater because they are legit BFFs IRL). In turn, Keery commented, “If you win David the Duffer’s get to shave my head,” EW reports. (The Duffer Brothers are the creators of Netflix show.) Naturally, the post turned into a barrage of fans responding to Keery and begging him not to do anything to his hair.
How realistic is this promise, really? Competing in Harbour’s category are Alfred Molina, Christian Slater, Alexander Skarsgård, and David Thewlis, any of whom could win but none of whom are shoo-ins. Meanwhile, it’s gotta be somewhere in Keery’s contract that he has to keep his hair ’80s-big for filming, right? Season 3 is a go, and Steve and his hair will most likely be in it. On the other hand, it’s already been confirmed there will be a time jump between the events of the second and third seasons, so maybe the script could explain Harrington’s sudden baldness. He could get a buzz cut after joining the army, or chop it all off in sadness after seeing how happy Nancy and Jonathan are. (When will he realize that Hopper is the one he’s meant to be with?)
We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
