There’s a more than solid chance you’ve seen mermaid hair looks in the form of ocean-inspired hair colors and waist-length beach waves, but today we’re coming at you with a totally new, refreshing take on the aquatic trend, courtesy of hairstylist Ursula Stephen.
The Hollywood hair mastermind, who’s worked her magic on A-listers like our March cover star, Lupita Nyong’o, 2 Dope Queens‘ Jessica Williams, and Jourdan Dunn (to name just a few), took to her Instagram Thursday night to show off a rad new style she created on singer Bebe Rexha. The mermaid-like look in question featured an array of what looks like 10 to 20 hairpins aligned to look like fish scales above the “I Got You” singer’s right ear. “Pin it!📍 #UrsieOnHair™️ #UnileverPartner #fishscale #bts,” read the caption on the post, which has already garnered a massive amount of love from followers.
Needless to say, we had to know how it was done, as we live for a fabulous hair accessory moment here at Allure headquarters. “This is something I’ve always wanted to do [and] what I did on Bebe is actually a mini version of what [I visualized] this to be, but I had to get it out of my head,” Stephen says of her motivation behind the look. “I have so many ideas for this [and] the next time I will go crazy,” she adds.
Believe it or not, it’s actually beyond easy to achieve this look for yourself. All you need is a set of hairpins (she used ones by Goody), some hairspray, and according to Stephen, a steady hand doesn’t hurt either. “It’s so simple once you set the hair in place with hairspray,” she says. “I use the Suave Micro Mist Natural Hold Hairspray and a few hairpins (these are not part of the design, but strictly for the foundation,” she explains. (This is so that the hair is set and sturdy before going in for the actual design.) Once you’ve got yourself a secure base, Stephen says you can go in with the additional fleet of hairpins, creating a bricklayer design as you go. The finished result will look very similar to that of mermaid or fish scales, and if you ask us, couldn’t be more perfect for pairing with an under-the-sea-themed makeup look of your choice. Might we suggest taking Tarte’s new Be a Mermaid and Make Waves Eyeshadow Palette for a spin?
