Chunky highlights had a time and place in hair history — and that place is the early aughts. In 2018, they’re either getting the rainbow hair treatment or are the subject of the before picture of a hair transformation. Canadian hairstylist Monika Quatrano recently posted the latter on Instagram, complete with chunky highlights of 2002-era Kelly Clarkson proportions. With her color correction expertise, Quatrano was able to transform her client’s hair into sleek platinum blonde.

Quatrano tells Allure that her client’s hair ended up in its tragic, highlighted state after seeing a stylist who assured her that they could dye her grown-out ombré hair blonde for a cheap price. Their version of blonde was thick strips of gold instead of delicate, small sections of icy platinum. In four hours, Quatrano was able to accomplish just that. In that amount of time, she jokes that she was able to take her client’s hair from 2002 to 2018. However, Quatrano said it was all worth it in the end because her client left saying, “Not all heroes wear capes.” Several people in the comments section of Quatrano’s Instagram post echoed her client’s sentiments, writing variations of “you changed her life.”

To correct the streaks, Quatrano focused on blending out the previous color with a cool-toned lightener by painting on highlights. Maintaining her client’s hair health was also key. She mixed the popular b3 Brazilian Bond Builder in the lightener to help strengthen her hair through the lengthy bleaching process.

If you ever find yourself in a chunky highlight situation, Quatrano suggests locating a colorist in your area who specializes in blonding and color corrections. “Invest in a color correction,” she adds. “You get what you pay for.” This hair transformation is proof that sometimes, spending more money than you typically would on a hair appointment is well worth it.
