Despite a full-blown nor’easter pounding the East Coast, summer is actually right around the corner. That means it’s time to start browsing all the upcoming trends for 2018. And if the brand Missguided is to be believed, optical illusions are about to be the hottest (and perhaps most confusing) trend of beach season.
Missguided has made a bikini which a wise writer at Racked has called the “Un-kini.” That’s because the suit is made up of a few pieces of black fabric connected by clear straps, and the result is bizarrely unsetting. It looks like the triangles are somehow floating in the air or taped to the model’s body, and it takes some time to figure out what exactly is going on with this suit. If you saw someone walking toward you on a beach in one of these things, you would be understandably confused.
Though this may be the first time that a clear bikini has had us scratching our heads, clear clothing and accessories have actually kind of become a thing lately. Both Chanel and Yeezy both hopped on the “clear boots” train, and Topshop followed suit with its plastic pants offerings. The brand debuted a pair of “clear knee jeans,” which were met with questionable feedback from the Internet (until Millie Bobby Brown wore them and made them look really, really cool), and then followed up with a pair of completely see-through pants that made absolutely no sense at all.
Actually called the “Clear Strap Triangle Bikini,” the Missguided suit is made of polyester and rubber, so despite the optical illusion it creates, no magic or pixie dust is actually required to keep it on. It’s definitely unlike anything we’ve ever seen before, and if you’re into it, it can be yours for $29. Silver lining? It will undoubtedly have people asking, “So, where’d you get your bikini?” all summer long.
