Potterheads, rejoice: The newest color to cast a spell on the users of Instagram is none other than Gryffindor hair, the creation of Virginia Beach-based stylist, Crystal Casey. The horizontal coloring in an array of warm and cool hues was enough to make us sit up and pay attention, but once we saw that it was inspired by one of our very favorite Hogwarts houses, we needed all the deets on how this magical look came to life.

“The placement of this color was 100 percent inspired by my friends Kristina Cheeseman and Caitlin Ford,” Casey tells Allure. “The color itself was inspired by Gryffindor from the Harry Potter movies, with my own twist of course.” To create the look, Casey started by bleaching horizontal lines onto the hair to serve as the base of her color creation. From there, she used a basic balayage and color melting technique to create dimension in the color. While the overall end look appears fully horizontal, she actually painted color on vertically and diagonally to really add depth to the strands.

“Since a lot of the natural brown base is left untouched, just about any skin tone can wear it,” Casey explains. It really all just comes down to how adventurous you’re feeling because, like she says, while this color is definitely not conservative, the bold placement can work for a 9-to-5 depending on the way you style it. If you’re not really into transforming your hair only to hide it from view in a pulled-back style, consider a more muted version of this look. If that’s the route you want to take, just be sure to bring your colorist a picture of the original inspiration so that they can get a better idea of how to tone down accordingly.

Whichever rendition of the look you decide to move forward with, remember that your hair-care routine will need to follow suit. “Proper care and maintenance for this type of color [includes] color-safe, sulfate- and paraben-free shampoo and conditioner,” Casey says. She goes on to explain that washing it in cold water will keep the color lasting at its max potential. “This type of color can be high maintenance depending on how you care for it,” she explains. But in the end, to look like you’ve stepped through Platform 9 ¾, I think we can all agree that a little extra care is well worth it.
