As she’s proved time and time again for the last 20 years, Christina Aguilera isn’t afraid to take her personal style to the extreme. But while, in the first half of her career, “extreme” has translated into assless chaps, bikini tops, and two-toned hair, in her latest photoshoot, Xtina is moving toward a completely opposite extreme. In her cover shoot for the new issue of Paper magazine, Aguilera poses without a single drop of makeup on her face.
The stunning cover image is an extreme close-up of the “Beautiful” singer’s face; she looks fresh-faced and glowy, and, without any coverage at all, her freckles are fully visible. In a few more shots inside the issue, Aguilera stays bare-faced, giving “off-duty Marilyn Monroe” vibes with her platinum blonde hair styled in a retro curly bob and looking over her equally freckly shoulders. In the accompanying interview, the mom of two talks about going back to basics (again).
“I’ve always been someone that obviously loves to experiment, loves theatrics, loves to create a storyline, and play a character in a video or through stage,” she told Paper. “I’m a performer, that’s who I am by nature. But I’m at the place, even musically, where it’s a liberating feeling to be able to strip it all back and appreciate who you are and your raw beauty.”
However, that doesn’t mean Aguilera will be putting away her signature red lipstick for good anytime soon. “I mean, I’m a girl that likes a beat face, let’s not get it twisted,” she said in the interview. In case you need further proof, look no further than the rest of the images from the magazine shoot. In those, the 37-year-old lets her makeup artist take her look straight from Marilyn-esque ’40s glam to an edgier, more futuristic style, sporting a variety of different looks, featuring OTT fake lashes, neon metallic eyeshadow, inky black lipstick, and matching magenta lipstick and eyeshadow.
