Another day, another corporate misstep. Just a few days after Chance the Rapper took to Twitter to call out racism in a Heineken commercial — causing the ad to be taken down 48 hours later — another company is making news for all the wrong reasons. On Tuesday, Groupon users discovered a racial slur in the color options for several pairs of shoes on the site and its accompanying app. According to screenshots of the product listings in question, the N-word was used to describe certain shades of brown, E! News reports.
The racial slurs have since been removed from Groupon’s website and app. In a statement to Teen Vogue, the company apologized for causing offense. It reads, “We are appalled that this language was displayed on our site. This product description was provided by a third-party seller via our self-service platform. Regardless, this is completely unacceptable and violates our policies — to say nothing of our values. When made aware of the issue, we immediately removed the deal — as well as the third-party seller — from our marketplace. Language like this has no place on Groupon, and we’re further strengthening our self-service controls to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
After several people posted photos of the offensive descriptors on Twitter, many others chimed in to express their own outrage with Groupon, with some even calling for a boycott of the coupon company. “Can something be done about Groupon now? I found this on 2 of their listings yesterday. Wtf?” one person wrote. “Groupon app is definitely deleted now. all these companies messing up is clearing up so much storage on my phone,” another added.
Others reacted to the generic response some people said they received after reaching out to Groupon’s customer service. According to one Twitter user’s screenshots, one of the responses from Groupon read, in part, “What works in one city may not be embraced in another.” “Which regions of the USA did u think this term was going to be accepted?” another Twitter user wrote.
