Back in the day, one of the very best parts about Easter was waking up to find an overflowing basket of candy with everyone’s favorite-to-look-at, but not-so-favorite-to-eat treat: Peeps. Today, it’s this Peeps-inspired hair color. The marshmallow birds and bunnies were one of the first pastel sweets created for the holiday, and so it only makes sense that they carry a certain amount of nostalgia. Fast forward to present day and, while still fun to look at, Peeps are less likely to be part of the Easter weekend agenda. Unless, of course, you’re hair hero Crystal Casey, a colorist based in Virginia Beach, Virginia, who decided to create a hair color that’s the most delicious-looking take on the super sweet goodie. Since we now have the same reaction to hair colors that we used to when it came to sugar-laden marshmallows, it’s no wonder we were dying to know more as soon as we peeped Casey’s colorful creation.
“I was actually contacted by Kenra to create an Easter look using Peeps as my inspiration,” Casey tells Allure when asked about why she turned everyone’s favorite childhood holiday candy into an even more tantalizing hair color. With so many different colored Peeps giving inspiration to this look, we asked Casey to tell us more. “This color pattern is basically like a 3-tier cake,” she says, “starting with the pink base color on the bottom moving into rainbow color-melts throughout.” In order for the pink base to show up as vibrantly as it did, Casey tells Allure that the hair absolutely needs to be bleached, as it would with any bold or neon color.
If you’re like us, the moment you read the words bold and bleach, you probably instinctively thought of how high maintenance this hair color must be. While any vivid color requires more maintenance than a typical neutrally-color-treated mean, Casey explains that this color can actually last up to two months simply by using the Kenra Color Charge shampoo, conditioner, and color-locking spray. Casey has one last bit of advice: “Oh, and, always, ALWAYS wash in cold water.”
If you plan on embracing this Easter-inspired look for the next two months, we’re totally here to support your colorful decision.
